OdoovsWinMentor

Odoo or WinMentor

When a stock-and-accounting package stops being enough, and when replacing it is not yet justified.

WinMentor is a stock and accounting package widely used by small and mid-sized Romanian companies, with decades of presence and accountants who know it very well. It is not a full ERP and does not claim to be.

The right comparison is not "which is better" but "have you outgrown what WinMentor can do". The usual signs: several spreadsheets keeping parallel records, no real-time view of stock at another site, no approval flow, and reports built by hand every month end.

If none of those sound familiar, WinMentor costs ten times less and does the job. We say so even when it means there is no project for us.

In short

Under ten users, with a single simple flow and no need for approvals or integrations, stay on WinMentor. Above that, or once the parallel spreadsheet has become the real system, an ERP pays for itself out of the administrative time saved.

Move to Odoo if

  • You have more than ten users or several sites.
  • Spreadsheets already keep records the system should be keeping.
  • You need approval flows, a CRM or an online shop.
  • You want true cost per product or per project, calculated by the system.
  • Closing the month means days of manual consolidation.

Stay on WinMentor if

  • You have fewer than ten users and one operational flow.
  • Accounting is the main need and everything else is simple.
  • You need no approvals, CRM, online commerce or mobility.
  • The budget cannot carry an implementation project, even in stages.

The figures are indicative ranges for the Romanian market at ordinary complexity. Licences are contracted directly with the vendor and change yearly; check them before deciding.

What matters in Romania

Both cover e-Factura. The difference shows up at e-Transport, at SAF-T reporting for larger companies, and at traceability: where WinMentor needs manual work or separate tools, Odoo generates the documents from the operation that produces them. If you have just come under the SAF-T obligation, that is the moment this comparison is genuinely worth doing with a pencil.

Frequently asked questions

At what size does moving to an ERP pay off?+

It is not headcount that decides but the number of spreadsheets holding parallel records and the hours a month spent consolidating them. In practice the threshold most often appears between ten and twenty-five users, or when the second site opens.

Can we migrate data from WinMentor into Odoo?+

Yes. We migrate master data, partners, balances and stock, and history according to how useful it is to you. Export from WinMentor is straightforward; the effort is in cleaning the data, not extracting it.

Our accountant knows WinMentor. How hard will Odoo be?+

It is the most common objection and it deserves to be taken seriously. Accounting training generally takes two or three sessions, and the first month-end close in the new system is done with us alongside. We also recommend keeping access to the old system for a few months, for reference.

Not sure which one fits?

The selection stage takes two to three weeks and delivers a written recommendation with a five-year cost for each option. We implement both platforms, so we have no commercial reason to push you either way.
