OdoovsSAP Business One

Odoo or SAP Business One

The comparison that matters for mid-sized Romanian companies: two systems aimed at the same size of business, at very different costs.

SAP Business One is not big SAP. It is SAP's mid-market product, and it compares directly with Odoo — the same client size, the same modules, comparable implementation durations.

The main difference is licence cost and who can work on the system afterwards. Business One is stable and mature; Odoo is cheaper, more flexible, and has more people in Romania who know it.

We see migrations from Business One to Odoo regularly, usually triggered by a maintenance renewal or a licence price rise. We also see the reverse, less often, at companies acquired by a group running SAP.

In short

At the same company size, Odoo generally costs between a third and a half of Business One over three years. Business One earns its price when you need the stability of a product that changes little, and a global partner ecosystem.

Choose Odoo if

  • Licence budget matters as much as implementation budget.
  • You need an online shop, point of sale or field application, integrated.
  • You want to customise without depending on a single partner.
  • Your processes still change and you want to follow them in configuration rather than development.

Choose SAP Business One if

  • Your group or large customers require a system from the SAP family.
  • You prefer a product that changes rarely, with a stable version for years.
  • You need a global partner ecosystem for subsidiaries in several countries.
  • You already have internal SAP skills.

The figures are indicative ranges for the Romanian market at ordinary complexity. Licences are contracted directly with the vendor and change yearly; check them before deciding.

What matters in Romania

Both have working Romanian localisation when configured properly, including e-Factura to SPV and the SAF-T structure. The difference you feel over time is how many suppliers can take the system over: with Business One, if the partner you worked with drops the product, the local options can be counted on one hand.

Frequently asked questions

Can we migrate from SAP Business One to Odoo?+

Yes, it is one of the migrations we do most often. We extract master data, partners, balances, stock and — depending on how useful it is — history, clean it, and load it into Odoo with at least two rehearsal migrations. At a 30–50 user company the whole project usually lands between €45,000 and €90,000.

Do we lose functionality moving from Business One to Odoo?+

You rarely lose functionality you use. What is usually lost is functionality that existed and was not used. What is genuinely lost is the team's familiarity, which is why training and the stabilisation period are the important parts of the project rather than the configuration.

What is the five-year cost difference?+

At 30 users the cumulative five-year difference is generally between €120,000 and €300,000, dominated by licences and annual maintenance. We calculate the exact figure for your situation during the selection stage, using the real quotes you receive from both vendors.

Not sure which one fits?

The selection stage takes two to three weeks and delivers a written recommendation with a five-year cost for each option. We implement both platforms, so we have no commercial reason to push you either way.
